pre-departure orientation day #3 (06/16/2021)

Staying awake 24 hours straight didn’t go so well… but I made it! Here’s how it went:

— 5:30 A.M.

Rise and shine! Searched around for my glasses and double-checked if I left anything behind.

— 6:15 A.M.

Hotel check out! Our shuttle got here around 7:00 P.M. and took us to the airport.

— 7:30 A.M.

Airport! Signed paperwork, bag check-ins (two checked bags are free), downloaded a quarantine app. Sadly, we said our last goodbyes to the iEARN staff in America, who we’ll miss a lot </3

Before our flight, a few of my friends and I ate at a Japanese restaurant near our gate.

— 11:30 A.M.

Flight from San Francisco -> Seoul (10 hour time difference). iEARN rearranged our seats closer together two days ago. Nothing out of the ordinary: plane food was alright, kids crying in the distance, and of course, me sobbing over yet another KDrama. Helen and I watched seven episodes of Crash Landing on You… I (might have) balled my eyes out and wrote a 5-paragraph text to my friend.

I went in with no expectations, but CLOY blew my mind. It’s more than just another ‘lovey-dovey KDrama’. It BURNS. There’s no prince charming or illegitimate chaebol to save the day. The pot dives into each character’s background and motivations from a realistic and relatable perspective (even the minor characters). From the Seri’s crash-landing to Captain Ri’s noodle-making, the show provided me both turbulence and comfort during my flight. I swear I went through an entire box of tissues.

side note:

  • The main couple in CLOY is dating in real life! And they’re so cute together! ❤

— 3:00 P.M.

Airplane arrival! Paperwork, immigration, customs, and everything took us 5+ hours, plus another hour for the shuttle ride. At this point, I think I was awake for over 20 hours… but the scenery was too pretty to miss!

— 7:00 P.M.

Quarantine hotel! We downloaded an app to submit daily temperature checks for the 14-day period. Scrubs and face shields covered the medical staff from head to toe. It was super scary, and they checked our symptoms and allergies/food restrictions before we headed to our rooms.

The quarantine facility also gave us some free stuff! There’s packets of drip coffee, green tea, a toothbrush + a tube of toothpaste, paper cups, and a self quarantine kit (including a K-94 masks, digital thermometer, and other basic necessities.

— 10:00 P.M.

Dinner and bedtime! The hotel check-in staff handed us a bowl of beef-flavored ramen, and the water boiler in room came in handy. Ahhh… this bowl of piping hot ramen made my day so much better. Being awake for 24 hours straight wasn’t enjoyable, but it surely was experience! I’d write more but I’m on my last brain cell, actually about to crash (land on you). Goodnight guys!
